Join us for a Disability Power Series featuring Jordyn Zimmerman, who will share about her journey as a non-speaking autistic self-advocate!
On October 20 from 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. CT, Jordyn Zimmerman will take part in an engaging conversation that touches on her experience being segregated and denied access to effective augmentative communication until the age of 18. From advocating across the government, to acting as the chair of a non-profit, and working across the education and technology sectors, she’s now using her voice to make change. Lauren Schrero, a 2026 Fellow and former colleague of Zimmerman, will be moderating this powerful conversation.
They’ll share reflections on why disabled voices matter, the importance of disability representation in leadership, and how the work they’re doing now is making an impact. Attendees will leave with actionable strategies and insights to drive meaningful advocacy within their own communities.

About Jordyn Zimmerman
Jordyn Zimmerman is a passionate educator and disability advocate. After being diagnosed as autistic at a young age, she did not receive access to augmentative communication until the age of 18. She now thrives on boldly showing up and redefining what is possible in learning spaces and throughout the broader community — and has personal experience challenging the status quo, which is featured in the documentary, This Is Not About Me. About Lauren Schrero (Guest Moderator)
Lauren Schrero is a 2026 Disability Lead Fellow. In her role as Deputy Director at SODC, she is responsible for Illinois' seven State Operated Developmental Centers, including operations, clinical services, and transitions. She is focused on ensuring high-quality, person-centered supports, protecting individual rights, and expanding opportunities for community living in alignment with IDHS-DDD's mission, the Olmstead Decree, and federal and state law.
